Who We Are...
Based in Washington D.C. with additional offices in New York City and Los Angeles, BlueLabs was formed in early 2013 by senior members of the Obama for America analytics team. We help organizations personalize their engagements with individuals, optimize communications, and achieve their strategic goals. Our team includes more than 40 data scientists, engineers, and strategists from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for using data to solve the world’s greatest social and analytical challenges. Through our work, we’ve directly and measurably improved the health and financial security of millions of Americans.
Since 2013, we’ve served more than 300 organizations, run more than 1,000 randomized/controlled experiments, built hundreds of models, generated over 6 billion touch points, reached virtually every contactable person in the United States, and driven significant improvements in some of the highest-profile private sector, advocacy, and government programs around the world. Along the way, we’ve developed some of the most innovative tools available in media optimization, reporting, and influencer outreach.
Our clients range from political campaigns to advocacy groups, unions, government agencies, and international groups, as well as global companies in the automotive, travel, consumer packaged goods, entertainment, healthcare, media, telecom, and other industries.
BlueLabs' Ripple Team is a fast paced, innovative group developing products that enable like-minded organizations to identify, understand and message the influencers who matter most to their particular cause.
We’re not building a team for a sprint — this is a project for the long haul. More than anything else, we’re looking for people who are excited by our mission, love to create, are honest about what they know, fascinated by what they don’t, and relish the opportunity to work with people who value the same.
The Ripple team has a bias toward action — but also a bias toward turning ad hoc processes into systems.
We’re looking for a Data Manager to help the Ripple team continue to improve the breadth and depth of the data that forms the backbone of the product. This person will have primary responsibility for the identification, acquisition, and processing of raw data sources through to the end user.
In this position, you will:
Operate within existing systems to integrate new data sources and continuously improve the product we deliver to clients
Identify, acquire, clean, and process new data sources, covering everything from creative commons web scrapes to FOIA requests
Oversee data gathering work performed by others on the team, prioritizing and performing quality control checks on the integration of new data sources into Ripple -- from raw data through to the end user
Work with project managers and the business development team to ensure that Ripple data are characterized accurately to current and future clients
Communicate issues, opportunities, and ideas for creative new data sources, making the case for a course of action and then seeing it through to completion
You probably have:
Experience working with data in a team environment. This could take the form of data analysis, interacting with data in a database, data entry, identifying or generating data for research purposes — or something else.
Experience working with spreadsheet programs like Excel or Google Sheets.
Experience keeping track of both urgent and important (less urgent) priorities over time -- strong attention to detail and personal organizational systems that help you keep many balls in the air.
The right person for this role will default toward assuming responsibility for the issues they encounter and bring a proactive, self-starter approach to their resolution.
You may also have:
Experience overseeing the day-to-day work of others. This could take the form of direct management, leading internal initiatives, project management, quality control/oversight responsibilities, or something else.
Experience manipulating or cleaning data in a text editor, with SQL / relational databases, or even the basics of Python, R, etc.
